The Chicago Bears were passing out free agent contracts on Monday. Seven undrafted new additions to the team include U of New Hampshire wide receiver David Ball, Boise State wide receiver Drisan James, U of Tennessee wide receiver Jayson Swain, Notre Dame defensive end Chris Frome, UNLV safety Jay Staggs, Georgia linebacker Danny Verdun-Wheeler, and quarterback Chris Leak from Florida.
The Bears may not have done a good job filling holes with their draft picks, but these adds to the team should cover at least the receiving end of quarterback Rex Grossman. The Bears were wise to sign on a new line of possible replacements for Muhsin Muhammad, who is now 34 years old and may be looking to retire in the next few years. They also added a few linebackers including Stanford linebacker Michael Okwo to fill in some depth and backup to Lance Briggs.
Ball is joined by college teammate cornerback Corey Graham who was selected as number 168 overall, a selection in the fifth round, and commented, “We practiced at a high level day in and day out. and we can do it all over again and only improve out skill at this level as well.” The rookies will be attending a mini-camp required by the Bears this week, and you can attend their games this coming season by getting tickets through StubHub.com.
