Bears Sign Chris Leak

The Chicago Bears signed undrafted Florida quarterback Chris Leak Monday as yet another free agent. Why an undrafted quarterback you ask? There has got to be a reason he didn’t go as the fifth round pick he was predicted as. Leak had won as many as 13 games in a single season, which is more than some of the quarterbacks drafted last weekend had won in their college career.

Leak has all the right stats, but an unspoken rule about quarterbacks says something about six feet and taller. Leak is an eighth of an inch shy of that and joins the likes of Drew Brees and Doug Flutie at the short end of the stick. Leak will draw up the line behind Brian Grese, JT O’Sullivan and Kyle Orton who back up a 6′1″ Rex Grossman.

“Height’s not an issue for me. All through my career at Florida my offensive lineman were between 6′5″ and 6′8″ and so I know how you have to see through lanes and how you differ your drop;” Leak is the second leading quarterback in touchdowns at Florida, one spot ahead of his teammate Grossman who was a Gator as well. Talent can’t be taught and we’ll see what talent really is come this season. Get your tickets on StubHub.com.
