After a laborious offseason, the Bears and Lance Briggs have finally agreed to a one year contract, according to ESPN.com. The contract will pay Briggs 7.26 million dollars. The sticking point was apparently the Bears agreeing to not designate Briggs as their franchise player next year, which will allow him to test the free agent market. At age 26, Briggs will most certainly command a great deal of attention in the open market, especially if he continues to perform up to his potential.
Even after the entire soap opera of this offseason, orchestrated by superagent Drew Rosenhaus, Briggs has done what everyone expected. His trade demands, strong words, and sound bytes will all be completely forgotten and forgiven by any team in need of his services at the end of the 2007 season for the Bears. Thus is the nature of the NFL. If you perform on the field, you can get away with quite a bit off of it.
