The L.A. Times has run an obituary on Ed Brown, former Chicago Bears and University of San Francisco quarterback. Brown was 78 years old. In 1951, Brown led the University of San Francisco football team to an undefeated season. He played 12 seasons in the NFL, eight of them with the Chicago Bears. He started for the Bears from 1955 to 1959. He played in the 1956 NFL Title Game and also did time at the Bears’ punter during his tenure with the team.
According to Brown’s family, he passed away in Kennewick, Washington, finally succumbing to prostate cancer. “All-Around Brown,” Brown’s nickname for his versatility on the field, grew up in San Luis Obisbo and led the University of San Francisco football team to a 9-0 record in 1951, the last year the school had a football program. He is survived by his daughter, his sister, his brother, his son, and two grandchildren.
