Bears’ Rookie D-Coordinator

The 2006 NLF season will start out with the Bears as one of the favorites in the NFC to make it to the Super Bowl. Their offense is solid, but their defense is their trademark, and many fantasy football managers know that the Bears are clearly in the top three of the NFL when it comes to “D.” If anything, the personnel on the field has actually improved from last year’s roster, which was at the top of the league in several defensive statistics. Darwin Walker was added as a tackle, bolstering what should already be a formidable run-stopping unit. But there is one question mark, and that is the defensive coordinator, Bob Babich. Ron Rivera used to call the defensive plays for the Bears, but was let go after the Super Bowl loss. Now he is with San Diego as a linebackers coach.

The bad thing about Bab is that he has no play-calling experience. Many believe that he was hired because he was a good friend of Smith’s, though few people deny that he will be able to run the defense effectively, especially within Smith’s game plan. Said Babich about Lovie Smith’s role, “He (Smith) listens in and if he wants to do something, obviously we’ll do it. This is Lovie Smith’s defense. I mean, that’s the way it is. He allows me the freedom of running the defense, but in the end it’s his defense and he has the final say when and what he wants to do.” Hopefully Babich can won’t rock the boat too much, as the Bears already have a great thing going.
