ESPN.com’s John Clayton has featured Rex Grossman as the “first” in his weekly First and Ten article. In the piece, Clayton speaks at length about the dichotomous Grossman, who has spent so much time working on the little things in the offseason - his footwork, his throwing motion, watching game film - but cannot seem to get through a preseason game without fumbling a snap. While Grossman has the support of his teammates, Bears fans are slightly more skeptical.
Clayton points out that Grossman will unfortunately face one of his very toughest challenges in week one versus the San Diego Chargers. The Chargers will be rushing many different blitz combinations at the mistake-prone quarterback, and if Rex doesn’t pass the test with flying colors, he will most likely hear about it from the Chicago fans all week. It’s not fair, but it’s just the reality for Grossman. What’s worse, an amazing performance from Grossman won’t keep his detractors at bay for more than a week or so.
