Larry Johnson feels Cedric Benson’s pain. ESPN.com is running an article about the similarities between the situation facing Benson at present in Chicago and Johnson’s own experience in Kansas City over the past few years. Johnson came into Kansas City to replace the injured fan favorite Priest Holmes. Holmes had been a workhorse for KC for years, and Johnson was not a popular player at first. However, two 1,700+ yard seasons later, people in KC are more than happy to cheer Johnson every week. Benson is hoping that he can have similar success in Chicago.
Benson’s problems stem from his past injury issues and his perceived personality issues. Chicago fans and media seem ready to pile on anyone and everyone as they demand another Super Bowl, and after a lackluster performance in week 1 vs. the San Diego Chargers, everyone - including the Chargers themselves - seems to be taking a shot at Benson. However, Benson’s teammates have been quick to come to his defense, just as they’ve defended oft-ridiculed quarterback Rex Grossman. One thing we all know for sure, though - Benson can silence his critics by performing on the field every Sunday.
