Bears Lose with Griese, so Now What?

In case you missed it, Bears fans, The Monsters of the Midway fell to the Detroit Lions on Sunday, bringing their record to 1-3 and their record with Brian Griese under center to 0-1.  Griese threw for three interceptions in a game that saw the Bears give up a 13-3 lead in the fourth quarter.  The final score of the game was 37-27.  If you do some math, that’s 34 points by the Detroit Lions against Chicago Bears in one quarter of play.  That is a fairly epic collapse no matter how you slice it.  The Bears shot themselves in the foot with turnovers, and they were unable to convert the big third downs they needed to win this game.

This game will either be a wake-up call or death knell for the Bears.  1-3 teams rarely make the playoffs in the NFL.  Fortunately, the Bears play in the NFC, so anything is still possible.  However, with all the injuries to their defense and the quarterback controversy, people seem to have largely ignored the fact that Chicago is almost completely without a running game this year.   While the Bears could never have foreseen so many terrible injuries to their defense, the fact of the matter is that with a real running attack, the Bears would probably not be 1-3 right now and might not even have a quarterback controversy.  The Bears need to start running the ball effectively if they want to save their season.
