Bears Still Going with Griese

Even after his embarrassing display last Sunday against the Detroit Lions, the Chicago Bears are sticking with Brian Griese as their starting quarterback.  Griese threw three interceptions in the horrific game that saw the Bears fall apart in the fourth quarter, allowing the Lions to score more than 30 points in one quarter of play.  Coach Lovie Smith is not making any moves after one game, but the Bears face a must-win game with the division-leading Green Bay Packers.  The Bears will be up against a red-hot Brett Favre and a young and exuberant Green Bay defense.  They will need to play a nearly perfect game if the hope to overcome all their issues and beat the Packers.

And what are those issues?  It’s hard to know where to start.  We could go with the depleted defense, so decimated by injuries that teams can mount fourth-quarter comebacks against the once mighty unit.  Or you could look to the running game.  Since letting Thomas Jones walk in the offseason, the Bears have had to live with underachiever Cedric Benson.  Benson’s poor play forced the Bears to turn Griese from game-manager into gunslinger versus the Lions.  Sure enough, it didn’t work.  Which brings us back to the QB problem.  Honestly, staying with Griese is the right choice.  But he’s not Brett Favre, and he’s going to need some help from the rest of the team if the Bears hope to right their sinking ship.
