Bears Slide Again in Power Rankings

ESPN.com has released their weekly power rankings, and Chicago Bears fans should really just avert their eyes.  The Bears have taken another nose dive this week after Brian Griese’s first start, from number 13 to number 20.  My, how the NFC Champions have fallen.  This is an epic collapse.  The Bears allowed 34 points in the fourth quarter of their last game.  34 points on the Bears’ defense is a lot for an entire game, much less one quarter of play.  34 points in one quarter of play is nearly impossible.  Your defense doesn’t just give up 34 points in one quarter by itself.  This was a team effort, with offense and special teams all having a hand in the loss.

The Bears are wedged between the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs in the Power Rankings.  I hate to be the one to say it, but neither of those teams are expected to make the playoffs, and if the Bears can’t turn it around immediately, they won’t be expected back in the postseason either.  Now luckily, this is NFC, and that Wild Card spot is going to be wide open.  The Bears can gain ground this week, and hopefully gain momentum.  However, they absolutely must cut down on turnovers, vastly improve their third down efficiency, and find their running game.  If the Bears don’t start playing like the NFC champs from last  year, things could get messy quickly.
