The Chicago Bears were featured in ESPN.com’s Burning Questions this week, with the question posed, “Are the Chargers or Bears in Bigger Trouble?” Merrill Hoge and Eric Allen both agree that the Bears are in much bigger trouble than the San Diego SuperChargers. While both teams are in trouble with their 1-3 records, the Bears have 4-0 Green Bay to contend with in their own division. No one is yet running away with the AFC West like the Packers are with the NFC North, and San Diego could right the ship with two straight wins over divisional opponents in the coming weeks. As for Chicago, they have no QB, no running game, and a depleted defense. They’re in trouble.
So what is to become of the Bears? First of all, they have to start winning the battles in the trenches. The Bears have not played with the same toughness and edge they’ve had in years past, and this has exposed their offensive issues even more than usual. Though lots of people have piled on Cedric Benson for not getting the job done as the running back, the fact is that he’s just not seeing the same blocks he was getting last year. The holes aren’t there for the running game, and the defense is out on the field for far too long every game. One need only look to last week’s game with the Detroit Lions - during which the Bears gave up 34 points in the fourth quarter- to see evidence of this. The Bears need to get back on track immediately to salvage their season.
