In what could be seen as a welcome change of pace from hearing about how badly the Bears are screwed if they lose to the Packers this week, we have this story about the fact that Lance Briggs entered a guilty plea in his trial over his offseason accident/leaving the scene/failure to report mini-scandal. While the whole incident was overshadowed by Briggs’ contract negotiations at the time, Briggs lack of punishment may have spawned a new trend in the NFL, as I definitely know I saw a similar story about one of the Buffalo Bills’ players last week. Either way, Briggs has plead guilty and most likely faces a fine and probation.
It will be interesting to see how many NFL players leave the scene of a one car accident before it becomes a punishable offense. Not to accuse anyone of anything, but there aren’t many good reasons I can think of for leaving the scene of a one car accident and not reporting it until the next morning, unless of course you needed to “sleep it off.” Being a rich and famous professional football player does not give someone the right to drive drunk. I’m not saying that’s what happened in Briggs’ case. I’m just saying that it looks bad, and as role models for young children, players should exercise greater judgment. Briggs will obviously be in uniform on Sunday.
