According to reports all over the internet, this one from the Sun-Sentinel, Brian Griese is a God among men. Like a chick who just broke up with her total loser boyfriend and is now easily impressed by any dude with more than a bus pass, the city of Chicago is apparently willing to laud any start by their QB that doesn’t end in total collapse as the second coming of Sid Luckman. Griese didn’t light the world on fire in his second start for the Bears, but he didn’t lose the game anyway. He managed to throw twice as many touchdowns as interceptions, and he had more than 200 yards through the air. Not legendary numbers, but enough to get the job done.
The Bears may rally around Griese. The thing Griese offers that it appears Rex does not is confidence. The intangibles the Bears showcased on Sunday were apparent to everyone watching the game. The Bears had a fire, a toughness, an intensity, and a swagger they haven’t had since they made their Super Bowl run last year. The switch seems to have come at just the right time, with the NFC still as wide open as ever. It’ll be tough for the Bears to catch the Packers now, barring total and complete Green Bay collapse, but they can still likely make the playoffs, which is all they’ll need to do provided they keep playing well. Don’t count the Bears out yet.
