Briggs Changes Tune

According to reports on ESPN.com, Lance Briggs now says he wouldn’t mind staying in Chicago after this season.  Bears franchise player and crash-scene deserter Briggs ended his media silence with a bang yesterday, telling reporters of his wishes to stay in Chicago and that his desire to remain a Bear never wavered, even when he may have been making statements that were quite the contrary.  This should come as some relief to Bears fans, who have watched in horror as their aging defense has dealt with injury after injury this season.  Losing Briggs at years’ end would only further compound matters for the Bears who are just struggling to get back to .500 right now.

Briggs was extremely vocal during the offseason about his displeasure with Bears management for not offering him a long term contract that he felt was acceptable for a player of his caliber.  I documented the whole thing and weighed in on Briggs’ antics during the offseason.  I was also not surprised to see Briggs finally sign and report to camp.  I am somewhat surprised to hear him now say he’d like to stay with Chicago.  One has to wonder if perhaps this is more to repair the damage Briggs may have done to his reputation than anything else.  Maybe it’s just lip service, but if Briggs does stay with the Bears, that is certainly good news for Chicago fans everywhere.
