When you’re a legend, you can pretty much say whatever you want. Just ask Gale Sayers. Sayers had quite a bit to say about current Bears running back Cedric Benson. Sayers said, among other things, that it was unfortunate that Benson didn’t earn his starting spot, that he was a better running back when paired with Thomas Jones, and that he was not yet ready to be a feature back in the NFL. He also said that he hopes Benson pulls it together soon, because the Bears can’t win with Grossman or Griese throwing the ball 50+ times a game, because “they’re just not that good.” Way to go, Mr. Sayers.
He’s not wrong. The Bears can’t win without a workhorse running back who isn’t afraid to put his head down and run people over. The thing is, they have one, but it’s not Cedric Benson. Adrian Peterson (the other one) has been putting up great numbers when handed the ball for Chicago. He has a great yards-per-carry average, and his runs just inspire more confidence than Benson’s. The same way Bears fans were clamoring for Grossman’s benching, they are now salivating over the impending Benson injury that they know is coming this season. Benson isn’t particularly durable, and if Peterson produces in his absence, the Bears might have a viable Super Bowl contender.
