The Chicago Bears lost to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, leaving many in Bears Nation to wonder if their season may not be over as well. The Chicago Bears lost 34-31 at home after a last-second field goal put the final nail in the coffin of their divisional rivalry. Perhaps more disheartening than the fact that the Bears lost was how the Bears lost. The Chicago Bears have often won games in spite of poor play by their quarterback because of their strength on defense and special teams, and also because of their ability to run the ball. This week, the Bears had a fine game from their QB, but Brian Griese could not overcome big problems from the running game, defense, and special teams.
Adrian Peterson carved the Bears up for 224 yards on the ground and three touchdowns. That statistic is appalling to anyone who grew up watching the Bears play football. While the Bears’ D is certainly decimated by injuries, their backups should have more pride than this. Running back Cedric Benson has been an absolute bust this season, and likely has the Bears’ management wishing they’d retained the services of Thomas Jones. Devin Hester had another return for a touchdown and even caught a TD pass in this game, but it was the special teams lapse at the end of the game that cost the Bears most. On the final kickoff after the Bears had tied the game, they allowed Peterson to run the ball all the way back into field goal range, setting up the game-winning score. The Bears are going to have to do some serious soul-searching if they hope to make the playoffs this year.
