Butkus Feels for Urlacher

Famous Bears Hall of Famer Dick Butkus has weighed in the Brian Urlacher situation.  Butkus is generally sympathetic to the ailing linebacker’s plight.  The legendary Bear’s career was cut short by recurring knee injuries, and he famously played through pain for much of his career.  Butkus can understand Urlacher’s not wanting to deal with lots of questions as to why he’s missing certain tackles and plays, as it’s very easy for any member of the media to criticize a person, but at the end of the day, playing football is hard.  I can only imagine that playing football with chronic back pain is nearly impossible.  And that is exactly what Urlacher is doing.

I know that a 3-5 record is not how the people of Chicago envisioned this season when it started, but turning on your most loyal star player for continuing to be loyal when he could just sit out.  Urlacher is playing his guts out on a team a loss or two away from being realistically eliminated from playoff contention.  He’s doing whatever he can to keep that from happening.  He does not deserve to be blasted for not playing as well as we all know he can.  Most professional athletes wouldn’t care enough to risk further injury just to make the playoffs.  Urlacher is a special guy.  Don’t turn on him just because this season isn’t going as well as you thought it might.
