The Chicago Bears defeated the Denver Broncos in overtime on Sunday, and their 37-24 gritty win has kept their playoff hopes alive. The Bears were all but dead in water if not for two amazing returns by Devin Hester. Hester returned a punt for a touchdown early in the game, and later returned a kickoff when Broncos coach Mike Shannahan inexplicably kicked the ball back to Hester after a Bronco touchdown. This gave the Bears new life and sparked their come-from-behind victory. The Bears still need to win out to make the playoffs, but this was certainly a step in the right direction.
Shannahan was contrite in his press conference, doing everything but apologizing outright for having the hubris to believe that he should ever kick the ball to Devin Hester. Hester is on pace to shatter the runback touchdown record, and may be the first player in NFL history to solidify his place in the Hall of Fame in only three seasons. Why anyone would ever kick the ball to this physical freak of nature, I have no idea. If you didn’t see the video of these runs, go find them. It’s not just that he’s getting TDs, but how he’s doing it. He makes it look so easy. It’s truly history in the making.
