John Clayton’s First and 10 is up on ESPN.com, and the Bears’ match-up with the Redskins is Clayton’s lead game this week. Tonight’s NFL Network battle will feature two teams each with five wins, each still desperately clinging to playoff hopes. While the Redskins’ tragic and unexpected loss of Shaun Tailor has understandably cast their entire season in a new light, the Bears’ free-fall this season is a bit more perplexing. Are the Bears feeling the effects of the Super Bowl Curse? Clayton details many reasons why the Bears have not been the same team they were during their run to the Super Bowl last year.
I won’t begin to try to boil down Mr. Clayton’s very in-depth and well-reasoned conjecture as to why the Bears haven fallen so hard so fast. We all know there are many factors that come into play - injuries, a stronger division, poor personnel moves in the offseason - but the main point from this First and 10 rundown that stuck with me was the idea that the Bears came into this season believing their reputation would lead to wins. In my opinion, that fact alone speaks volumes about the Bears as a team and an organization. You can’t enter into an NFL season believing you don’t have to work for every win. Hopefully the Bears know they can’t just assume a victory is coming to them tonight, or their postseason hopes will be shattered.
