Bears to Start Orton

According to reports out of ESPN.com, the Chicago Bears will be starting Kyle Orton this weekend.  This makes tons of sense, given that the Bears are out of playoff contention, for all intents and purposes.  As we reported yesterday, the Rex Grossman Era is all but over in Chicago.  Brian Griese is not the answer.  The Bears will try Orton out for the next three games to see how he looks nearly two years removed from his last start in the NFL.  You may remember that Orton was the QB who led the Bears on quite the winning streak in Grossman’s absence during Orton’s rookie season.

Orton looked extremely solid in that stretch of games, especially for a rookie.  While the Bears have been committed to Grossman as their quarterback for years, it seems apparent that it is time for both parties to go their separate ways.  The Bears need to assess whether or not Orton is ready to be their guy moving forward.  If Orton looks average or worse, expect the Bears to go after a QB pretty hard in the offseason.  The Bears will have a lot of soul searching to do this offseason as they look back over this season and try to figure out what went wrong and what needs fixing first.
