As the Chicago Bears ease into the offseason, we’re going to see a few more of these types of stories popping up here and there. This story is about young cornerback Greg Fassit exploring some of his other options in terms of teams who might be interested in his services. The Bears have shown interest in re-signing Fassit, but they would be looking for a reserve, and their money would certainly be “reserve” money, and not very much more. Chicago has their starting corners locked down for awhile, so Fassit may want to see if he could get a little more action elsewhere in the league.
The Bears may see a few more young defections such as this (though Fassit has yet to actually leave the team) after their disappointing season. It’s easier to convince young players to stay on and be a part of your practice team with the hopes of one day making it to the roster of your Super Bowl-caliber football squad than it is to convince young talent to take less money to get beaten up by your 5-11 starting team. At the very least, people want to believe that even if they’re only on the practice squad, they’re playing with the best and getting better. This could be a long offseason for the Bears.
