Hardy Resigns

According to this published report out of Suntimes.com, Chicago Bears linebackers coach Hardy Nickerson resigned yesterday, leaving a coaching vacancy that Lovie Smith must now fill accordingly.  This will be the fifth linebackers coach the Bears have run through in the past eight years.  The move adds even more unrest to a linebacking corps that may likely see the departure of standout Lance Briggs to free agency.  Nickerson only held the position one year and was given the job quickly after previous linebackers coach Bob Babich was promoted to defensive coordinator.

This isn’t exactly the way the Bears wanted to begin their offseason.  While Nickerson was not the most experienced coach - nor was he the greatest motivator - he did have some experience with the Bears’ system.  Now, the Bears must once again start from scratch.  This is not the best case scenario, but I’m sure the Bears will bounce back and hire someone extremely qualified to come in and  lead this exceptional linebacking corps next year.  And it’s not written in stone that the Bears won’t be re-signing Lance Briggs, so I’m not ready to sell on the Bears just yet.
