Bears fans all remember Mark Anderson’s rookie year. His 2006 campaign saw him lead all rookies with 12 sacks on the season. The fifth-round draft pick was a big part of the reason the Bears defense was so stout last year, as Anderson made many teams pay for double-teaming other guys. This year was not so good for Anderson, as the Bears defense was more banged up, less effective, and otherwise just not the same unit they were in 2006. Anderson’s stats suffered. But now, Anderson says that he is ready again to play with a chip on his shoulder and prove his rookie season was not just a fluke.
The Bears need Anderson to return to the form of his rookie season. Factually speaking, the Bears are going to need many of their young up-and-coming stars, their new rookies (whoever they are), and their returning leaders to all step up in 2008. In 2007, the Bears appeared to rest on their laurels, expecting success to simply walk to their door and hand them a pretty basket full of wins and a playoff spot. It didn’t happen like that, and now the Bears are at home. If they want to avoid a similar fate next season, they will need to kick it into a new gear starting with the first practice of training camp next year.
