This article out of the Chicago Sun-Times shines a bit of light on the fact that the Bears are looking to gain at least one compensatory draft pick this offseason. The compensatory picks are distributed during the owner’s meetings from March 30 to April 3 to teams who have had significant losses via free agency prior to the draft. These picks can fall anywhere from the third to the seventh round. While the Bears didn’t have any huge name losses this offseason, they are hopeful that their net losses add up to at least one - if not two - compensatory draft picks.
In a draft where the Bears already have eight picks, an extra pick or two would only help their cause. The fact remains that the Bears have significant holes to fill on their team, especially on offense. I expect to see the Bears draft offensive players early and often, and I expect them to go after players they feel can make an immediate impact in the NFL. If the Bears could snag a compensatory pick in the third round, that would have to considered prime for this team’s needs. In the later rounds, the player quality diminishes, and the odds that those players can make a big impact immediately are uncertain.
