So technically it’s not a hold out while he’s skipping voluntary team activities, but it is still news that Brian Urlacher will be staying away from the Bears’ voluntary offseason program due to lingering contract issues. Urlacher cannot be fined for missing these activities, but his absence could potentially affect his playing time. Urlacher is seeking a contract extension that will pay him a bit more money. As of right now he is only scheduled to make the same amount of money this year as he was making last season, which doesn’t sit well with Urlacher after other Bears were given extensions ahead of him.
Urlacher definitely has a point here. This is a messy situation for the Bears. On one hand, the linebacker just had neck surgery, and so paying him more money might not seem like a sound financial decision. On the other hand, the Bears spent the earlier portion of this offseason supporting Urlacher when he said there was nothing to his surgery, really. So now what do they do? I think they have to acquiesce to Urlacher’s demands, or at least some of them, to make this situation go away. The Bears have enough issues without adding an unhappy Urlacher.
