The Chicago Bears need to iron out some contract issues with two of their best defensive players. Both Tommie Harris and Brian Urlacher have contracts that need reworking. Harris’s contract is a more conventional type of renegotiation. The young player is entering the last year of his rookie contract, and the team that drafted him is trying to lock him down and secure his services for the remainder of what would be considered his prime. Talks have stalled because of Drew Rosenhaus, but I expect a new deal to be in place for Harris by the time training camp roles around.
As for the Urlacher situation, that’s a whole other can of worms. Brian Urlacher is a player in the twilight of his career. While he’s not totally done yet, the fact remains that his best years are almost certainly behind him. Now, coming off neck surgery, Urlacher wants to rejigger his contract to pay him more money at the end of his career. I find this entire line of reasoning absolutely insane, and I hope the Bears don’t actually acquiesce to Urlacher’s requests. Brian Urlacher is not the linebacker he used to be. He’s still great, but he’s being paid great money, and I don’t think the Bears should bend on that. At the very least, they must reach an agreement with Harris before they discuss anything with Urlacher.
