Mendenhall Wows Bears

Let it never be said that the Bears are a boring franchise.  Whether they are winning most of their games on the way to the Super Bowl on the back of amazing defense and special teams play or losing more games than they should last season, it always seems the Bears have some interesting side stories going.  Sometimes it’s Rex Grossman throwing INTs.  Other times, it’s franchise linebackers holding out for more money.  And now, it appears the Bears have decided to add some intrigue to their draft day.  The Bears held a seven-hour meeting with running back Rashard Mendenhall on Thursday, fueling speculation that they may pick him 14th in the draft.

This is just straight crazy talk, and it’s the kind of thinking that gets teams like the Bears into trouble in the first place.  A franchise running back is something every team in the NFL covets.  For just that reason, I don’t expect Mendenhall to fall to the Bears.  Even if he does, I wouldn’t take him.  The Bears have a running back, and while Cedric Benson didn’t set the world on fire last year, he didn’t have much  help.  The Bears need an offensive line before they can make snap judgments as to whether or not it’s time to get rid of Benson.
