Witness Comes Forward in Benson Incident

According to reports surfacing on ESPN.com, a witness has come forward in defense of Cedric Benson as it relates to his boating incident in Texas over the weekend.  In what now appears to be a very interesting and possibly dirty incident, this young woman is claiming that Benson was not drunk.  She also claims she was so distraught over the treatment Benson received that she phoned her father and asked him to dial 911.  As the woman tells her story, the entire incident begins to look more and more like police brutality and less and less like an issue with Benson himself.

I said this at the beginning of the week, in not so many words, but I’d like to reiterate now.  When any black person in Texas gets roughted up for “resisting arrest,” you kind of need to wait awhile before passing judgment.  I’m not saying the police in question acted improperly.  I’m simply saying that it appears there are varying accounts of what happened that day on the lake, and that everyone should withhold their judgment on both Benson and the police until all the facts come to light.  As it stands, the Bears and the NFL have yet to take any action, and I believe the public should follow suit.
