When the Bears decided to move return man Devin Hester to wide receiver, there was much skepticism. Critics voiced opinions, many of them negative. There was concern that Hester could not run routes, or that he was somehow unable to learn a complicated NFL offensive scheme. There was criticism lobbed at the Bears for not being able to draft good offensive players (unfair) and then shirking the duties onto Hester. Through it all, Devin Hester has quietly become a wide receiver, and he hopes to become the NFL’s next version of Steve Smith.
Many people forget that Smith started out as a return man. Even more people forget that there have been many return men who have turned out to be flashes in the pan, burned out by the grind of their jobbed or robbed of their explosive speed by one injury. To keep Hester as just a return man is silly. Luckily for Bears fans, Hester has been taking his opportunity to bust out of the return man mold very seriously. Don’t be surprised to see Hester making some big plays as a receiver in the 2008 season for the Chicago Bears.
