Jones a Bear?

In the wake of the Bears cutting ties with running back Cedric Benson, former Detroit runner Kevin Jones has expressed interest in joining the team, according to an unnamed source close to Jones cited in the Chicago Tribune. Jones, 25, is coming off a torn ACL in the final week of last season and has been working out for NFL teams in an attempt to find a roster spot. Jones, the Lions’ second of their two first round picks (30th overall) in 2004, eclipsed the 1100 rushing yards mark in his rookie season and it appeared as if the sky was the limit, but injuries and a shaky offensive line have stunted his growth as an NFL player.

I don’t see how signing Jones could hurt the Bears. Their backfield is a bit unproven aside from veteran Adrian Peterson with promising rookie Matt Forte and second-year man Garrett Wolfe rounding out the backfield. Peterson has proven to be a reliable guy but his big play potential is limited. Rumblings out of Bears camp are that Forte has been impressive while Wolfe remains somewhat of a wildcard. Jones could add depth and potentially be a steal should he return to form. It can’t hurt to at least work the guy out and see what he’s got left in the tank. After all, he’s only 25.
