Urlacher Attends Voluntary Workout

More news on the Brian Urlacher wire. The Pro-Bowler came to a voluntary team workout, the first such appearance this offseason since Urlacher began contract talks with the Bears. Urlacher has been in talks with the Bears over extending his contract and upping his compensation and has already rejected an $18 million raise with a one year extension to 2012. Although Urlacher has not been present at any voluntary training up until now, he was part of the Bears’ mandatory minicamp.

Urlacher brings that certain something to the Bears defense and other players feed off of his presence. In the Sun Times article, defensive end Alex Brown gave his opinion on a defense without Urlacher saying, “It’s like [asking] what does it mean to have gas in the car? It ain’t going to go unless the gas is in the car. He’s the man, and it’s great to have him out here.”

With Benson gone, the Bears need to end the talks with Urlacher and lock him in. That said, deals like this tend to take some time, especially in the NFL. Urlacher isn’t going anywhere, but a happy star middle linebacker is worth the extra money. If the Bears can shell out money to extend the contract of a kicker (Robbie Gould), then Urlacher is entitled to his as well.
