Any NFL team looking to claim newly-released Cedric Benson off waivers had until Thursday to do so. Not one team bit. By picking up the waiver, a team would have had to honor the rest of Benson’s contract with the Bears, which equaled a not-so-staggering $820,000 in 2008. Apparently, the legal troubles that made Benson fall out of favor in Chicago seem to be following him out of the Windy City. After an incident with police on a boat in Texas involving alcohol, Benson was arrested on charges of driving under the influence less than a month later. The Bears responded quickly by waiving on Benson and cutting their losses with the first-round draft pick.
Benson deserves any trouble he finds himself in now. As the old saying goes, “if you fool me once, shame on you, if you fool me twice…” The Bears took a good, long look at their mostly-talk-very-little-action running back and decided he could take his mouth and less-than-impeccable stats elsewhere. Benson is now a free agent and will most likely be picked up. Fortunately for the Bears, the deadweight named Benson is off of their roster and the 2008 season looks even rosier without him.
