One of the biggest surprises from the 29-13 win against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, September 7 was the performance of Chicago Bears rookie running back Matt Forte. Yes, fans, coaches and teammates expected and hoped that Forte would be able to run the ball, but hardly anyone was prepared for how exceptionally well he did it. Forte himself seemed like the only one to see his feat as simply adequate and told Larry Mayer about his expectations for himself, saying, “Actually, I pretty much met them. I set high expectations for myself and I wanted to get over 100 yards in my first game, and I did that. I just want to be consistent the whole season.”
Forte took 23 carries and turned them into 123 yards and a touchdown. Even more of a testament to his drive was his reaction to taking a hard hit from the Colts star safety Bob Sanders. Sanders is the NFL defensive player of the year, and he didn’t get the title from going soft on running backs. Forte took one especially hard hit, which took him off of the field. Forte missed only two plays before jumping right back in and continuing to pound through the Colts defense. See his moves for yourself by getting Chicago Bears tickets from StubHub.com.
