Special Teams Prides Itself on Field Position

While it may be an afterthought for some teams, the special teams for the Bears are an important contributor to the Bears game plan.  The weight on the special teams increased a few years ago with Nathan Vasher and Devin Hester making beelines for the end zone.  This year, the special teams is again showing themselves as a vital component of the Bears’ game plan.  Take Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions showcased the defensive side of special teams instead of the return unit.  The Lions started all but two possessions inside their own 25 yard line.

Much of the credit has to be given the special teams coordinator Dave Toub, who has turned his guys into a top notch unit.  He said, “Field position is important to any team, and that’s why we do what we do on special teams. It’s all about that. Our ultimate goal is to win the field-position battle every week. Our kickoff coverage has been solid so far this year.”
