Hester Feeling Out New Role

This year has been one of change for Devin Hester.  He has gone from being a return specialist to being utilized as a wide receiver and also added a hefty contract extension. Fans and analysts have been waiting for some of the mind-blowing returns that made Hester so famous, but so far none have happened.  And there may be more than a few reasons.  First, Hester made brilliant plays in some games, but not every game.  The first time he runs back a kickoff for a touchdown, everyone will assume he is back to normal.  Also, the Bears special teams has made a reputation as the top unit in the league.  This has led to extra coverage from other teams and less opportunities for brilliance.

Hester is also stretched much thinner as he is asked to produce numbers on the offense as well. Hester has been stepping up big time on the offense in the last couple of weeks, making 11 catches for nine first downs. Special teams coordinator Dave Toub also sees the media scrutiny as detrimental to Hester, saying, “The media is berserk with this kid. The pressure … you shouldn’t put pressure on the kid like that. He’s getting better and better. This kid is improving. Have you seen what he’s done as a receiver?”
