Rivalry Heats Up

Although the Chicago Bears’ game against the Green Bay Packers is important because both teams are fighting for playoff spots, this match-up would be heated no matter what the teams’ records were. The NFC North opponents have one of the oldest and most storied rivalries in the league, meaning every game between the two is a nail-biter. Defensive end Adewale Ogunleye summed it up, saying, “When I first signed here, everybody was like, ‘We don’t care if you guys go 2-14 as long as those two wins are against the Packers. It’s a crazy community when it comes to that, and we understand that. When coach Lovie got here, he said that his No. 1 goal was to beat the Packers, and that’s still our goal every time we start a season.”

The end of the 1990s and the beginning of the 2000s were not a good time for the Bears in the rivalry as they lost 18 out of 20 games between 1994 and 2003. Recently, however, it has looked up for the Bears. Coach Lovie Smith joined the team in 2004, and since then the Bears are 6-2 against Green Bay, even with Brett Favre at quarterback.
