Leftwich Wants Spot on Bears Roster

Chicago bears general manager Jerry Angelo already made comments suggesting he would be looking for a quarterback, possibly a free agent, during the offseason. One quarterback, and a good one at that, seems to already be lobbying for the position: Byron Leftwich.

The Pittsburgh Steelers backup made these comments to the Chicago Sun-Times, despite the fact that his team is still in the Super Bowl hunt, “I’m a fan of Lovie Smith. I’ll just say that. I thought that was where I was going to go in the beginning. I remember hoping that I would go there. I just wanted to be a part of the tradition, the history of the Bears. You’re growing up, watching games at Soldier Field on TV, I wanted to be a part of that coming out. I thought there was a chance I would go there. I want a chance to go somewhere and play. I guess everybody wanted to see if I am healthy, and now they can see it. I’m ready to play again.”

If his stats indicate his readiness to play, then Leftwich is correct in his assessment. This year, his first with the Steelers, he had a combined passer rating of 104.3 in the five games he played in. Those are the best stats he has had since he entered the league in 2003. He spent four seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars before spending last season with the Atlanta Falcons. Be there next season with Chicago Bears tickets from StubHub.com.
