Since former Detroit Lions coach Rod Marinelli was hired to be the new defensive line coach for the Chicago Bears, coach Lovie Smith, the Bears players and other have been speaking out about their support of Marinelli. Now, Marinelli speaks out for himself why he chose Chicago and what he sees in the team.
He said, “It starts with the head coach. To me, the most important factor is [to work for] somebody you believe in, and I believe in Lovie—what he stands for, what he does and how he does it. Second is the defensive system. I love it, and it’s something I believe in. It’s built on fundamentals and execution, and for a coach, that’s something you should embrace—embrace the ability to go out and teach every day.”
The Bears weren’t the only team looking at Marinelli for his defensive knowledge as he was also recruited by teams like the Seattle Seahawks. Marinelli showed his skill when he was with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as their defensive line coach. Granted, he did fail as a head coach with the abysmal Lions, but many are pointing fingers elsewhere as to the reason for the Lions’ numerous problems.
