The Chicago bears have made good on their promise to bring in new talent at quarterback, but their first addition probably won’t be the only one. They signed former Northwestern standout Brett Basanez, who is a Chicago native. The Bears likely see him as another option for backup to Kyle Orton rather than a competitor for the starting position, but that won’t stop Basanez from trying.
He said, “Regardless of who is [here], I’m going to compete. And I want to either win the [No. 1 spot] or push Kyle so much we’re playing Feb. 2 next year. It’s not about competing for the No. 2 or competing for the No. 3. You go into camp and compete. If you play well enough, you’ll start. If not, somebody else will.”
The Bears will most likely be without Rex Grossman next season, opening up the need for another backup. He spent 2006 and 2008 on the practice squad for the Carolina Panthers and missed the 2007 season with an injury to his wrist. The Bears weren’t the only team looking at him, but in the end the quarterback took the offer of the team he had been a fan of for years. Get your Chicago Bears tickets at StubHub.com.
