All of the Chicago Bears’ new addition as well as all of the returning veterans got their first glimpse of working together in 2009 with a minicamp that kicked off today. They will start the day by getting physicals and then they will start practices on Tuesday. The practices on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday will be non-contact.
Head coach Lovie Smith said, “This will be a fundamental camp. Normally we have two periods of individual [drills], but in this camp we’ll have five periods. This is a time for individual instruction for our players. There won’t be as much of an emphasis on the team stuff. We’ll get more into the team emphasis a little bit later on with our OTAs.”
This minicamp is much earlier than other years, where the first minicamp wasn’t held until after the draft. The earlier draft allowed the new coaches to become familiar with what their strengths and weaknesses are before adding new college players from the draft. Some players who are recovering from injuries will not participate like Charles Tillman, Kevin Payne and Trumaine McBride.
