Bears’ Scouts Working Hard

If you have ever wondered who it is that picks out the college players the Chicago Bears need to keep an eye on, it isn’t the coaching staff. The Bears team of Chris Ballard, Marty Barrett, Rex Hogan, Ted Monago, Mark Sadowski and Jeff Shiver are the Bears’ area scouts who spend loads of time picking out the strengths and weaknesses of upcoming talent.

Director of college scouting Greg Gabriel explained their position further. He said, “They’re starting a conversation with the coaches at the schools, finding out about work habits and background. Then they’re going to games during the year and they continue making visits to the school during the year. They’re probably getting to the major schools five or six times in any given season because we want to know as much as we can about the players.”

When the scouts profile a player, it isn’t just his football skills they are looking at in their evaluation. They also check the player’s reputation and whether or not he has been disciplined for any reason while in college. They are undoubtedly in full-swing as the 2009 NFL Draft draws closer.
