Many may have doubted, but general manager Jerry Angelo actually pulled it off. Despite numerous teams vying for Jay Cutler, he will be taking the field in a Chicago Bears uniform for the 2009 season. In order to get Cutler, the Bears had to give up multiple draft picks as well as quarterback Kyle Orton.
Angelo commented on Cutler, saying, “We felt that [Cutler] is a very good person, a good leader. He had some things that happened in Denver. We recognize those, but we treated them as just speed bumps; part of the growing process. He’s highly competitive, he’s highly emotional. That just comes with the territory… One of the things that was communicated to us throughout is that he’s a big Bears fan. He grew up a Bears fan, and he’s excited he’s going to be here in Chicago. He’s a Midwesterner, so he knows a lot about our history as a club.”
Cutler may have been stealing most of the headlines, but the Bears also added offensive tackle Orlando Pace to the lineup. The seven-time Pro Bowler has been signed to a three year deal, making yesterday one of the biggest days roster-wise in quite awhile for the Bears.
